For those Interested In Publishing their Own iPad Texts

I just received the following links from a Colleague who got them from an Apple Rep. Would appreciate the communtiy's feedback on the efficacy (or lack thereof) of these various service offerings as I have never tried them.

Thanks! Mark Lennon

  1. I thought that this feature was built into iWork (which I don't have). I decided to try Zamzar because I have used that before. However, it wouldn't convert a Word (.docx) to an iBooks (.pub) file. Before I uploaded a file, I saw the PUB option as an option to convert the file to, but once I uploaded a DOCX, that option was no longer there. I wonder what format the file needs to start in for it to be convertible to PUB.

  2. I found the list:

It can do PDF files and other e-book formats. I just converted a document to PDF and am trying to get Zamzar to convert it. It seems to be taking a long time (it's been stuck on "uploading file" for several minutes).

  3. Something must have gone wrong with the first Zamzar upload because it took forever to load, and I never got the file. I did it again, and it took about 1 minute total, plus a minute to put the new file into iTunes and sync it with my iPad.

The document I converted was somewhat complex with a variety of styles and a table. For the simple stuff, it was great. I love the option of putting a document into iBooks because it is annoying to read documents in PDF format when you're used to the power of iBooks. However, it did a lousy job of converting anything beyond simple text. Not only did it not reflect any of the styles (such as different fonts for different level headings (it just put them in bold), it seemed to delete the spaces in my headings. It also destroyed the table that was in the document, making that whole section of the document unreadable.
